On June 26, 2018, the largest volcano in the Galapagos Islands and one of the most active volcanoes in the world began to erupt. Volcano Sierra Negra is located at Isabela Island, which is the biggest island of the archipelago.<\/p>\n

According to the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador and the Galapagos National Park Authority, approximately 250 inhabitants from local communities near the volcano have been evacuated. The last eruption of this volcano was in 2005.<\/p>\n

Sierra Negra volcano has a crater of 9 km (5.59 mi) long and 7 km (4.35 mi) wide, and it is one of the sites that travelers visit every day as part of their land or cruise trip. The Secretary of Risk Management reports that the eruption is at a moderate level. Nevertheless, school activities, as well as sightseeing, have been suspended for the safety of all concerned.<\/p>\n

According to the Decentralized\u00a0Municipality Government\u00a0of Isabela Municipality, on a session\u00a0held on July 2, it was agreed to reopen the seightseeing site of Volcano Sierra Negra, lookout #2 (length 00\u00b049\u201937.52\u2033S \/ latitude 91\u00b005\u00b438.97\u2033W). Also, it will be open to the sites named Campo Fumar\u00f3lico or Minas de Azufre (Sulfur Mines)<\/p>\n
