Day 2 : Buenos Aires To Ushuaia | Embarkation
After breakfast, your English-speaking guide will assist with your transfer to the airport for your flight south to Ushuaia, independently booked. Upon arrival, you will proceed on your own to your hotel, allowing flexibility in your personal arrangements.
Known as the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia sits between mountains and sea at the edge of Patagonia. Spend time exploring the town, wandering nearby forests, or venturing into the wild landscapes of Tierra del Fuego, a paradise of glaciers, rugged peaks, wetlands, and flower-filled meadows.
In the afternoon, embark the M/V Ushuaia and meet your expedition and lecture team. After settling into your cabin, the ship sets sail through the historic Beagle Channel and scenic Mackinlay Pass.
Day 3–4 : Drake Passage Crossing
As you cross the legendary Drake Passage, named after Sir Francis Drake, you sail through the Antarctic Convergence, where cold polar waters meet warmer northern currents, creating a nutrient-rich environment that supports extraordinary marine life.
Join the expedition team on deck to spot seabirds such as albatrosses, petrels, and skuas, often following the ship’s wake. The Ushuaia’s open-bridge policy allows guests to visit the bridge, observe navigation procedures, and watch for whales. A full program of expert-led lectures enhances your understanding of Antarctic wildlife, history, and exploration.
The first icebergs and snow-covered peaks signal your arrival in the South Shetland Islands, first sighted in 1819. Weather permitting, you may soon step ashore for your first encounters with penguins and seals.
Day 5–8 : Antarctic Peninsula & South Shetland Islands
The South Shetland Islands offer unforgettable wildlife encounters, from vast penguin colonies to beaches dominated by Antarctic fur seals and southern elephant seals. Sailing into the flooded volcanic caldera of Deception Island is a breathtaking highlight.
At King George Island, observe Gentoo and Chinstrap penguins alongside seabirds and international research stations. Livingston Island hosts thriving penguin colonies and resting elephant seals.
The Antarctic Peninsula delivers dramatic scenery and deep historical significance reminiscent of the early explorers. You will explore a pristine world of glaciers, ice-filled waterways, and towering mountains, with opportunities to see Weddell, crabeater, and leopard seals, as well as humpback, minke, and orca whales.
Depending on ice conditions, the voyage may include some of Antarctica’s most scenic passages, such as the Gerlache Strait, Neumayer Channel, and the iconic Lemaire Channel. The plan includes up to two landings per day at selected sites.
Possible landing locations include Paradise Bay, Paulet Island—home to large Adélie penguin colonies and the remains of a historic survival hut—and other highlights such as Cuverville Island, Neko Harbour, Pléneau Island, Melchior Islands, Portal Point, and, if conditions allow, Petermann Island, the southernmost Gentoo penguin colony.
Day 9–10 : Drake Passage Northbound
The return crossing of the Drake Passage offers time to relax, review photos, and reflect on your Antarctic experience. Wildlife viewing continues on deck, guided by the expedition team, along with final educational presentations.
Day 11 : Ushuaia & Return To Buenos Aires
Arrive in Ushuaia early in the morning and disembark after breakfast. You will proceed independently to the airport for your flight back to Buenos Aires.
Upon arrival, an English-speaking guide will greet you and provide a comfortable transfer to your hotel, ensuring a seamless end to your expedition journey.
